The extraordinary backcountry ski race between Crested Butte and Aspen is the first part of the Grand Traverse Triple Crown, the combination of the three Grand Traverse Events: Ski, Run, and Bike. The event starts at midnight with over 400 people in teams of two heading out into the darkness from Crested Butte Mountain to Aspen Mountain. Participants climb nearly 8,000 vertical feet and travel nearly 40 miles over the Elk Mountains.
For safety, racers must:
Have a high level of physical fitness, experience in the backcountry, and the necessary equipment to survive in strenuous to potentially life-threatening conditions.
Have one partner. No more, no less.
Jointly attend Gear Check (Athlete Clearance), Mandatory Racer Meeting, and Mandatory Pre-Race Briefing, with partner.
Carry all Mandatory Gear throughout duration of the race, including an activated Tracking Beacon.
Stay within sight of their partner at all times, passing through checkpoints together or otherwise being subject to disqualification.
