Anthracite Ridge, Ohio Peak Hike
This is a spectacular fall hike with a 360 degree view of the valley’s colors. Hike to the top of the Anthracite Ridge and look down the Ohio Creek drainage towards Gunnison or west towards Paonia. The next time you drive to Crested Butte you can point out the ridge line you stood upon. Trails in this area are not always well defined or easy to locate. Participants should be able to hike uphill at altitude without difficulty and be comfortable with round trip distance of 6-10 miles and an elevation gain of approximately 2,500’. Be prepared for a strenuous hike. We aim for Ohio Peak (12,271’), the higher peak on the east side of the ridge. The group’s primary objectives are to experience great views, a sense of accomplishment, a shared adventure and a greater understanding of the local topography and surrounding wilderness areas. Participants should bring a daypack containing 2 liters of water or a hydration system of similar size, appropriate and comfortable hiking boots for on and off trail, wind and rain jackets, warm layers of clothing including a warm cap, lunch, additional snacks, camera, and sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat) trekking poles are also recommended. Cost includes transportation to and from Western campus to hike location.
